Google Earth Tutorials, Using GE

From Google, In outline form, everything from A-Z on how to use GE and to format and edit GE maps. Includes , of course, a search function. If you want to build, not just view, GE maps, this is a must read.

Google Earth and Maps Links

In addition to the Portland Google Earth map links found on my home page, these are other links to sites with  maps and instructions on using Google Earth or Google Maps. Some include mash ups combining Google Earth with other constantly updating data sources.

Order shown is my subjective rating (of the moment) based on usefulness/coolness.

Google Earth Community

Learn from and share with others what you know and see hundreds/thousands of places and map tours constructed in GE. Northern Lights, Birding in Australia, Zone 51, Tour of 100 cities, find submarines from space, 820 webcams—its ALL here!

Google Earth Hacks

Not affiliated with Google in any way, but lots of files, news, and forums of interest to GE community.

Google Earth Blog

You knew there had to be one, right?  “The Amazing Things About GE”.  Amen.

Google Maps in Excel

A beginning primer of using Excel to import data from Excel into GE, including a sample. NOTE: To use the import function you need to purchase an annual license to Google Earth Plus—current cost $20. More details on Google Earth purchase options here.

Weather Underground Weather Stations Map

This real time map allows user to input zip code and then save as shortcut/bookmark a map that displays dozens of personal weather stations showing temp, dew point, wind direction and more. Link uses downtown Portland Zip Code (97204) but easy to locate and change Zip in your browser address bar.

Google Maps Mania

It’s a blog, it’s a plane. LOTS of mashups: New York City Real Estate, 100 Mountain Biking tracks in France, US Track and Field running routes, etc, etc, etc.

Juicy Geography

GE in the classroom. Examples include how to show your school on a map, how to build an urban land use map, and this lesson on seismic hazards in San Francisco

Google Earth Sightseeing

The top ten places including Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Eiffel Tower, Venice, the Golden Gate Bridge….you get the idea.

Freesounds

Geotagged sounds uploaded by users from around the world. Good illustration of how different file types—pictures and videos—can be geotagged and then linked to GE. Look to bottom of page for instructions on how to download Freesounds.kml file and then open and save in “my places” in GE.

NEW—BatchGeocode.com

Created by Phillip Holmstrand of PortlandMaps, this online tool allows importing of data in Excel, creating  lat/long for use in mapping software like GE.
