More GE Housing Maps

This map illustrates bringing together [a mashup] of two different datasets in a single map. This map uses HUD project labels that when expanded include hyperlinks to regularly updated data from PortlandMaps that are SPECIFIC to that ONE project and its surrounding neighborhood.

The sample map contains HUD data on 12 State of Oregon bond financed projects in the City of Portland which have expiring Section 8 contracts over the next several years. (A periodically updated MS Access database of multifamily assisted contract expiration information can be downloaded from HUD at http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/mfh/exp/mfhdiscl.cfm).

When this map opens in GE, the visible property label shows the project name, the number of assisted units and the expiration date of the contract. Users can automatically fly a tour of all 12 projects by choosing View, Play Tour from the top toolbar in Google Earth or simply zoom in to any one of the 12 projects.

Portland’s PortlandMaps is a nationwide leader in integrating property records and many other kinds of data into GE map formats. I was able to leverage their work by adding a hyperlink within each property’s label. When an individual property label is clicked in this map, a text box opens and the user sees a hyperlink that will take them directly to regularly updated SPECIFIC information about that INDIVIDUAL property. Data includes selectable layers including assessed value, age, zoning, building permits, neighborhood crime data, etc.

Note again the tiny file size of the map: It’s less than half the size of a typical one page word processing document, so it makes an ideal email or electronic newsletter attachment or link.
